TITLE
THE DAY I GET HOME
SUMMARY
Martha Yancey Garner was an extraordinary woman who endured enormous tragedy, trial, and suffering in life by holding onto her faith. According to the doctors, she should have died at birth, but didn't. At three years of age, her older brother saved her from being killed while she played beside a busy highway. Martha grew up as a pageant queen and was eventually even given the title of "Auburn Beauty" in 1963 at Auburn University. That same year, she would marry her fiance, Jim Garner, a commissioned officer, who would then be deployed to South Korea for their first year of marriage. Upon his return, he began to build a business; but, even though they had hoped for a large family, they had their only child in 1967. In 1970, she received word that her older brother had been killed in a tractor accident. In 1989, a friend who helped Martha with the house and baby while she was teaching, was murdered by her husband. In 1996, Martha's parents both died in the fire when her homeplace burned to the ground. She faced these tragedies by devoting herself, more and more, to prayer and bible study. Otherwise, she was always doing everything she could to make their house a "home." She tirelessly taught a Sunday School class at church, a position she loved and considered to be her calling. Then, shortly before Martha died of kidney failure and sepsis, her daughter, Kelly, was diagnosed with Epilepsy and faced two brain surgeries.

Prior to Martha's death in 2022, she began to have incredible visions and visitations from the other side. One vision she described as "a very big man, strangely dressed, with hair all over his face." She said this man just sat and watch her all night long at the foot of her bed. When asked who he was, she said she thought it might have been Jesus. Another vision she had was her grandfather who was dressed in a nice black suit and tie. Then lastly, just before she died, her mother came to her in a vision and told her it was going to be a "Hallelujah Christmas." After all of Martha's trials and sufferings, it seems as if her heavenly family was preparing for her to "get home." Martha found her sense of "home" by asking God to give her peace. He gave her that peace, in the midst of her storms, with a testimony that she even used while a counselor with the Billy Graham Crusades. As written in the title song of the soundtrack, she was eventually able to "lay down her trials and trade a cross for a crown." The song also says, "Freedom from suffering is something I've never known, but I'll know what it's like on the day I get home." Without question, Martha Yancey Garner was eventually able to lay down her trials and trade a cross for a crown. She was finally able to hear her Lord and Savior say, "Well done" on the day that she got home!
